Susan Sarandon - Biography

Susan Abigail Tomalin was born on 10/04/1946 at New York City, NY.

Following her graduation from Edison High in New Jersey in 1964, she enrolled at the Catholic University of America's drama school in Washington, D.C. where she studied until 1968. While there, she met Chris Sarandon, another aspiring young actor. The pair got married in September 1967, and eventually divorced 12 years later.

She was soon to become a regular on the daytime soap opera, A World Apart. However, it wasn't until her substantial part in Louis Malle's Pretty Baby that audiences began to take notice of the glamorous redhead. Malle was so impressed by her performance, that she landed a role in his film Atlantic City, which was to earn her an Oscar nomination.

Susan Sarandon received a fourth Oscar nomination as Best Actress the same year she essayed the mother of large broods in both "Safe Passage" and "Little Women" (both 1994).

Perhaps her most infamous role remains that of Louise in the cult classic, Thelma & Louise, which earned Sarandon and her co-star, Geena Davis, Academy Award nominations. Her role in The Client earned her a fourth Best Actress nomination, before she finally won her first Academy Award for Dead Man Walking.

Guided by her social principles, she rejects characters that are heroes going in for ordinary people who become extraordinary when their moment comes. In that vein, she rose to the occasion and seized her moment at the 1993 Academy Awards, delighting some and infuriating others when she took 28 seconds to speak on behalf of Haitian refugees with AIDS.
